I had the same thing happen on 3/24/00. I pulled over immediately and checked the oil level, and it was just where it was supposed to be. It hasn't happened since. Mine was also running just as smooth and quiet as ever. I had a friend who had the same problem in a Jetta about five years ago, and it turned out to be a bad oil filter. It was clogged with something, and it severely inhibited the oil flow. I'm going for oil service a little early just to be safe.
