Curious... why the Exhaust Manifold? (archive)

It is well recognized that the intake manifolds and rear mufflers are the first critical points in removing restrictions from the the air/gas flow pathways. But, after those two critical points in the air flow/exhaust pathway, my understanding is that the head itselft is the next most restrictive point, not the exhaust manifold. If the next most restrictive point in the path is the head intake port diameter, bowl area, and valves size, does extrude honing the exhaust manifolds do anything by itself?

Just curious how you identified this and what the reasoning is. It's definitely not to be ruled out, but I understood the head to be the bottleneck... As others have expressed, I would kill for 24v dohc heads on that baby!
