From what I understand/heard:

840 -> 8 cyl
950 -> 12 cyl

91~94: 840-850I (and IA)
94~97: 840-850CI (and CIA)
(actual dates unknown to me)

between the I and CI, I dont' think there is a difference, except newer models and maybe little improvements...
