Ian,

The current tire that I have on my car (245/45 17") is the Dunlop SP Sport 5000. This tire is incredible in terms of price/performance. Previously, I could literally light up the tires with the Michelins and Pirellis; the Sumitomos were good and netted about 30,000 miles (I drive that in one year on Oklahoma highways on my commute to work @ 130 miles per day). However, the Dunlops are going to EASILY give me about 40,000 miles (currently have 25,000 miles with about only 35% tread wear)!!!! Check them out at:

http://www.dunloptire.com/tires/sp5000/

These tires just plain will not spin (except on wet pavement of course-- and with Traction control off). Sound like I'm impressed? I am. Best tire for the money that I have purchased so far. I have spent over $275.00 per tire(Pirelli P7000--and that was before I discovered Tire Rack and when that was the newest hottest tire for Pirelli-now its the PZERO), and the SP5000's only cost me $127.00 per tire and have a *340* wear rating, *AA* traction, and an *A* temperature rating. Best of all they stick out at the sidewall further than the rims on my Speedline 17" rims, so the first thing to hit a curb is tire, not my $1,000.00 rim. Check out the comparison between the SP5000, the BFGoodrich Comp TA/ZR4 and the Michellin Pilot XGT Z4 on Tire Rack's site. The combined tests netted:

BFG: 5.86
Dunlop: 6.49
Michelin:6.38

The test stated that under severe driving the Dunlop wore faster than the Michelin, but considering that I have owned both, I think it is caused by extreme LATERAL wear, as I have experienced MUCH better tread wear from the Dunlops in the real world off the track and on the highway. My .02USD worth.
