Hey don't feel bad, the first time someone posted a message saying "the local STEALER..." I had no idea that's what people call BMW dealers.

Getting more HP out of a BMW engine is an expensive proposition. Performance parts are expensive, primarily because they are finely engineered (mechanical tolerances are very exacting), but also because tuners demand large premiums because they're expensive cars. The one advantage you have over the 850 is that you're engine is more common since its also in the 5 series. The 850 is a VERY expensive engine to modify.

My suggestion would be to learn as much about hte car as possible before doing anything. The thought of modifying should only occur when you're dissatisfied with soemthing or spot an area where BMW's engineering left some untapped potential (yes, this has happened). First, consider concentrating on the driver, not the car. The performance is already excellent and likely beyond most average driver's skill levels (no slight intended). Consider attending a BMW driver's school with the car to learn performance driving skills. One of the benefits is that you'll find the cars weak points for potential upgrading first hand--not by asking those who've never even driven one!!!

That said, others (myself included) have gained a significant increase in performance by changing the rear differential ratio for about $500. BMW does this with nearly all performance models (850CSi vs. 850, M5 vs. 535, 740Sport vs. 740). You gain significant acceleration across all mph, yet reduce top speed and lose some mpg. I believe the 840 uses a 3.64 ratio so you could go to a 3.91, a 7.4% change.

Chipping is always an option, although I have not tried it.

Finally, a friend stopped by the other day with his Dinan Supercharged 540 which makes about 430hp. An expensive proposition.
