According to a recent Roundel article, BMW produced only a single M8 prototype with a twin-cam V-12. Conjecture was (and remains) that the company bowed to pressure from the Green party not to produce such an egregiously fuel-thirsty automobile. Shame. As I recall, one caption in the article described the one-off M8 as a "German F40."
