I read in BMW car of April 2000 that there is a possiblity the V12 used in the 750 will be equipped with dual DOHC (48 valves). Lets hope this derivate of the McLaren head will fit the all mighty V12 used in our cars (we should be so lucky: 500+ bhp. It will probably cost a bundle but it sounds hopefull).
If its true it will probably fit the 850Ci engines sooner than the 850i (with 5.0L compared to 5.4L)

For what is worth: I think that they (ie. the BMW engineers) designed the 8-series and wanted a high-performance engine for it, but cost-wise had to stick to what was at hand...a V12 used in a limo. Which does goes nice performance but could have been much better.
So it's a heavy car...that only means that fast cornering is more difficult (which they tackled nicely with rear-wheel steering in the CSi!), standing quarters still are very competitive...

(just my 0.02$)
