A set of 24 valve twin cam heads is all that's missing. Considering the cost of new M5 heads at about $12k, woosh... instant fantasy. You're right though, the stock engine is in essence a limo engine, way de-tuned. This explains why it responds so well to efforts like the Conforti chip (40hp), enlarged intakes, cams, free flow exhaust, etc.

Point of fact though... the CSi, Ci and i all use the same head across all years (one common BMW part number). Basically, BMW just added displacent and compression by boring and stroking the block for later versions including the CSi. No bigger valves, nothing. The CSi even uses the same exhaust manifold. I still think this goes a long way to explaining the CSi vs. M8 badging. M didn't breath on the CSi's S70, they coughed in its direction. There must have been some serious hand-tying of the M-engineers and they must not have been happy.

The CSi is a wonderful car, but its similarity to the 850i/Ci is far closer than most realize (oh boy, I can hear the flames licking at the door).
