I had the same problem that many other 850 guys have had. The manual shows that there is a factory remote installed, and that all you need is the BMW control. Multiple Dealers were of no help. Not that they couldn't help, but they wouldn't help me. They said that it could be one of three remotes, and that there was no way to find out unless they ordered them and we tried to calibrate them. Then they would have to send back the ones that didn't work. I asked them if there was some way that they could check with they boys in the MOTHERLAND, and they said that there would be no record of what was installed in the car even if you have the VIN. Somehow, I feel like this is fiction.
I got the schematics, and spliced the whole thing into the wiring in a manner that would leave the existing locking system undisturbed in the event that I did stumble across the correct key fob later. While installing the Autoloc, I was able to verify that the module and wiring of the factory system is in place in my car.
The advantage that I have found with the Autoloc is that it is radio and not infrared like the factory. In other words, it will work without having line of sight. The disadvantage is that if the fob's battery is low, you can get unpredictable results like inverting of the lock/unlock buttons or all of the windows rolling down when you initiate an unlock. Having an aftermarket system is better than no system at all.
