Ok, so if I understand you correctly, the fill hole is in the bottom of the pan, but recessed, ie it is higher than the bottom of the pan allowing you to fill the pan from it.

As I recall I could only find one plug, which I assumed was the drain plug, but I do not remember where it is/was. I'll look at it again next time I am under the car.

Does anyone know what is so special about the specified BMW oil?

Thanks so much for all your help

Jeff
: :
: No, the refill hole is on the bottom of the pan. There is a small deep sink part and on the top of it there is a refill hole. When you refill on the flat surface then you fill until the oil drips from that hole. When the oil is dripping then you are done.
: The drain plug is on the side of the pan, I belive on the passenger side.
: You could try a Mobil 1 synthetic transmission oil , also very good quality and a lot cheaper then BMW oil. Autozone sells them for about 6USD/quart or so.
: The "old" filter has a different part #, and the new one is the following : 24 341 1 422 419
: With the old style one, the shifting was a bit harsh specially between 2-3 and 3-4. The new one has better oil flow I guess.
