Missing door compartment (interior) for 96 - 840ci (archive)

I seem to be missing a compartment on the drivers side door of my 840ci. Does anyone know what is suppose to be there? I assume it is some sort of storage comp. The operations book makes no mention of it? There is a built-in frame with a plastic mechanism inside, along with what appears to be a slide in type guide on the top. Any help would be apreciated.
