: I'd have to agree with Len's perspective of the 850's maintenance and performance (a thorough discussion), with one exception. I have yet to find any problems specific to the 1991-1993 model years. To my knowledge these cars share the same reliability as all other production years.

: There has been confusion in the past in that the early 750, not 850, v12s(from 1988 to 1990) had some well known problems, mainly heads bolt breakage, overheating, and electrical system gremlins. However, the later 1991 850 did not share these 750-specific problems. Is the early 750's reputation mistakenly spilling over to the later 1991-1993 850?

: Maintenance issues and discussions raised over the past year in the e31 email list (an off-line forum with over 50 850 owners) have not identified any 1991-1993-specific problems or reliability issues. Recalls specific to the 1991-1993 850s were for minor issues: Throttle sensitivity, air bag sensor ring, and radiator cap seal.

: 850 reliability issues are shared by all years of production: DK motors, intake manifold gasket leakage, OBC display pixels, seat misallignment, and sunroof cable system. This is likely because not much changed between 1991 and 1997 years. Comparison of BMW ETK system shared parts numbers (compatibility) across all years shows very little change in electrical and mechanical systems. The known repair areas remained the same.

: Can someone please enlighten me?

I have no specific experience with early 850 problems. I was only figuring that (with respect to electrical) cars that are the “first” for anything usually have some bugs to work out. I have seen where manufacturers will slipstream newer components under the same part number (as an example the alarm system is up to revision 4 of the same part number). No insult intended.
