I follow your logic, but a "first" production defect history with all the normal telltale signs of decreased functionality, added repair costs, incident of breakdown, increased maintenance, etc. has yet to surface for early vs. late 850s.
"Versions" are likely OEM parts supplier issues (price, sourcing, availability) since the electrical features and their reliability never changed. From the first OBC in 1991 to the last in 1997, Borg or Siemens, they all drop pixels. At least we can count on BMW for consistency!
