Actually, there is an "8-Series Registry" maintained by Bert Smith, a frequent participant on this board. I'm not sure of the details, but if you look in the back of the BMWCCA Roundel publication under Special Interest Groups the contact information is listed. Bert has a few posts on the board so you could also track down his email. There is also a detailed e31 email list for 8-Series owners that is moderated off-forum by Paul Brown (email e31@his.com to join; I believe ownership is a requirement).

I think it would be an excellent idea to track 850s in a registry. The only caveat I would suggest is that a registry might provide a road-map of sorts for the wrong sort looking for a "midnight acquisition." I had my M-Parallel wheels stolen about three months ago and would be a bit shy to post location, VIN, etc.
