Here's one specific example of some improvements in the E31 during its lifetime:

The EML/DK setup for the early E31 M70 V-12s was manufactured by Bosch, and contained several fail-prone areas. The EML/DK setup on the M73 engine was build by Seimens and incorporated several design changes to make the unit more reliable and to trigger fewer spurious faults. The later vesion (EML-III) dispensed with the reduction gearbox, relying instead on a direct drive DC motor. Also the throttle pedal sensor was changed from a potentiometer that varied the voltage to an improved design using a variable inductor to modify a frequency signal. Apparently this method is more reliable.
