: Here's one specific example of some improvements in the E31 during its lifetime:

: The EML/DK setup for the early E31 M70 V-12s was manufactured by Bosch, and contained several fail-prone areas. The EML/DK setup on the M73 engine was build by Seimens and incorporated several design changes to make the unit more reliable and to trigger fewer spurious faults. The later vesion (EML-III) dispensed with the reduction gearbox, relying instead on a direct drive DC motor. Also the throttle pedal sensor was changed from a potentiometer that varied the voltage to an improved design using a variable inductor to modify a frequency signal. Apparently this method is more reliable.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but the 1994-1997 Siemen's (part no. 13 54 1 702 693; used from 12/94 to 8/97) suffers the same fault sensing asa the pre-94 Bosch units did. Several of the e31 list members with 1994-build-date CSis recently encountered the issue and posted (Mr. Castle). The issue is purported to have been resolved by the post-9/97 Siemen's unit (part no. 13 541 1 745 207) which did away with the reduction gears, but these units have yet to reach the 75k mile point so no one knows yet. Let me know if this square's with your understanding or I'm missing something.
