The M73 (5.4) engine contains the updated EML-III, direct drive DK motor eliminating the gearbox. The cable enters the DK assembly at the top of the motor casing. The older EML-II DK cable enters alongside the DC motor barrel.

The CSI contains the S70 (5.6) engine, which uses the EML-II setup off the M70 engine. If Steve's having a problem with DK's, they're the older units with the reduction gearbox.

I'm not certain if BMW stared off with Seimens or Bosch (I'm on the road right now and not near the tech literature), but I do know they switched during the changeover from the older version to the newer. I might have the manufacturers backwards.

I've got a technical briefing document from BMW detailing the differences and the rationale why they made certain changes. Mostly based on experienced gained replacing failed DKs from the second-generation setups.

Wasn't the M73 engine introduced in 1995 to meet CARB requirements?
