Ok, I am trying to find the right set of M5 "Throwing Star" wheels for my E34 and after spending hours reading the archives for the E34, M5, and 8-series boards, I still have some questions and am even more confused than ever before. If you E31 owners could help shed some light on these issues, I promise to compile and post the information on each respective message board. A little cross-pollination is sometimes good...

1) First, how many different sizes are there?

I know the E34 M5 came equipped with 17" x 8" but I have read about a special Nurburgring package that used a staggered setup: 8" in front and 9" in rear. Are these 9" variants available in the US, or are they hard-to-find special order items?

And what about the 850CSi fitment? Were these the same wheels or a different (incompatible?) offset?


2) What are the part numbers for the above wheels? I have currently encountered two part numbers thus far: (these are for the naked forged wheel without covers!)

36 11 2 227 706 (17" x 8" silver)
36 11 2 227 743 (17" x 8" silver with polished lip)

To further complicate matters, I think I have seen the naked (uncovered) forged wheels in THREE variations:

- all silver paint
- silver painted lip with black painted center spokes
- polished lip with black painted center spokes

(The last two variations may be the same wheel, and I may have mistakenly categorized them due to the amount of brake dust and lighting conditions available when I saw them.)


3) If there are different finish choices for Throwing Star wheels, how many part numbers are there? 3 for the 8" and 3 for the 9"?

Or were the polished lips only available on the Nurburging package or 850CSi?

Or were the early 1991 M5 wheels painted black in the center and later M5 wheels were left all silver?


4) Finally, I have read that it might be cheaper to buy the 1991 M5 wheel set (with turbine/whitewall covers and hubcaps) and then just replace the covers with newer Throwing Star covers. But can this be true if they are using the same forged wheels underneath the covers? Or are the part numbers different and the dealerships are stupid for charging less for basically the same wheel?
