Just considering getting an 8-series in a few years once my '91 318iS is worn out....however, i am scared of the longevity and service costs of the V12 engine, especially one with, say, 100K miles on it. I hear that the V12 is essentially a V12 block with two 325i heads on it, and 850-specific intake/exhuast manifolds. Is this true? If so, are we talking about heads from the M20 (E30-style) 325i engine or the newer M50-style engines found in the E36 325i? I'm assuming that if its from the M20 engine, then it has TWO timing belts to change? This sounds pretty absurd. I know the heads from 325i's will stay solid if you feed them well, but what about the longevity of the V12's BLOCK and other components? I know a decent amount about BMW 4-cyl and 6-cyl engines (e30) but I know nothing about the larger engines. I heard that some V8's had blocks that wore out....does the same go for the V12 in the 850i? I'm also under the assumption that it has the exact same engine as the 750i/iL.....So, what can you all tell me about these things? I think the 8-series is one of the most beautiful machines ever to be produced by BMW, and the classic looks never grow old, even though the 8-series dates back to 1990. I would be interested (in the future) in purchasing one, but I don't want to be overwhelmed by problems. Also, do the 6-spd trannies have any probs? IE: Porsche 968 6-spd's have pinion bearings that fail, etc etc.
