The M70 does have, essentially, two M20 (two-valve) heads but they're driven by a one continuous single row chain. It's hydraulically adjusted and good for at least 150K. The heads are also equipped with hydraulic valve lash adjusters, so there's nothing to touch on the heads. Nada, zilch, zip.

Only thing wrong with the head is with early M70's. Banjo bolts securing the oil feed pipe worked loose, starving the camshaft bearings and lobes of oil, producing visible scoring.

Block is bulletproof. Period. Made of Alusil, has none of the problems of the V-8. Nobody on the E31 list has reported any problems with blocks. Just don't overheat it.

Things that do fail are the usual - water pumps, gaskets, DK motors, hoses and the like. The intake manifold spacer gaskets eventually crack and suck air, but it's more an annoyance that serious problem.

The M70 is a severely understressed engine. It should last forever.
