I'd avoid both and keep looking. Both sound marginal.

: The well documented woes of the Nasdaq stock market mean I had to let go the 1997 840 I almost purchased a couple of weeks ago. To those that were interested this means I will not be able to pull any details on the front arm rest which was fitted to that car, sorry ;-(

: However, all is not lost as I can still afford to own and run an 8 series..........it will just have to be an older one.

: My wife is VERY keen on having brilliant red. There are only 2 for sale at this time, both are same price:

: 1993 850 auto. 56k miles. Main dealer history up to last oil service but now 6k miles overdue an Inspection I service. Last receipt for work done on the car there were some steeering / suspension parts replaced as they had rusted. I believe this is due to the car spending the last 3 years right on the south coast of England (salt spray country).

: 1994 840 auto. 78k miles. Full main dealer history, just had Inspection II. Engine has the original Nikasil V8 block. I would not buy without having all three parts of the M60 engine test carried out but that is of course no guarantee.......

: Which one is the better proposition? Avoid both and wait for something else to turn up?

: Out of interest I spoke to my local main dealer and they say the M60 warranty is 5 years / 100k miles whichever is first. This does not seem to stack up with the 6 years in the USA. The dealer did say I would not be out on my own if the engine failed, BMW would 'make a contribution'. Wonder what he would have said if I asked for that in writing ;-)
