: I know this is kind of a FAQ but I haven't found a concrete answer so far. I'm considering buying a 1992 (July) 850i from a friend, I know him and that he cares for his cars and did all services (of course he also has the records). My problem is the quite high mileage of the car, 180kkm (112.000 miles), the V12 engine shouldn't have a problem with that, but what's with the 4-gear automatic transmission or other expensive parts? How likely will they fail in the next years and how much could it cost to replace them (I'm in germany, so I think parts might be a bit cheaper than in the US, but not really cheep anyway, and I can't/don't want to repair my car myself, so it won't be just the parts...). I don't expect the car to be cheap in maintainance, but if I've got to expect $5000-10000 in repair costs in the near future I'd rather go for a more expensive newer model...
: Thanx for any advice!
: P.S: I'd be going to spend about $15k for the car, it has some nice add-ons I need to have (like nokia-mobile-phone-preparation or remote controlled locking) but also had a few minor crashes one of which isn't completely repaired yet (and I'm not sure whether I should do it, it's a small bumper on the right side from a piece of wood lying on the road). Think the price is OK if I won't have /big/ problems in the next years?
I own a '92 850i with 149,000 miles! You are correct with your concerns about transmission problems...I had to replace mine at about 115,000 miles and it cost a little over $4,000 from the dealer in Florida. However, I LOVE this car and have owned it since '93. The dealer a couple of months ago was going to "offer" me $13,000 to trade it in. It's worth more to keep it...Personally, if you like the car and can afford to spend some money to keep it in top shape you can't go wrong! You know the saying...If you want to play, you're gonna pay!!
Good Luck! -Matt
