Buying a '97 840: Any advice not already posted? (archive)

Hi Everyone

I found a 97 840 with 70k miles on a BMW dealer's lot, no service records, and will make an appointment with a mechaninic to have it checked out on Monday morning. Does anyone have any recommendations as to where to take it? Or anything in particular the mechanic should look for? The VIN # came up clean on CarFax.

I have read Chris B's long post of May 3, 2000 - it was very good; thanks Chris!

I was also planning on buying a 2 year service contract (covers most but not all items) for $2900. Any comments?
