Is this Euro style or US square receiver style? (archive)

This looks like the European stlye hitch, which is completely different from the US style square receiver that the bike rack and other attachments fit into.
The Euro stle was available from BMW, and some cars are prewired for fuses for this option (my 1993 US spec has empty fuse slots labeled trailer and trailer socket).
BTW, where are these pictures from?
