1993 850Ci UK spec

Had the non franchised dealer I bought the car from supply a second key fob as part of the deal but they didn't initialise it.

I have the handbook which clearly explains how to do this but I can't work out if I have to re code the original unit as well. The handbook seems to suggest I have to. I have this fear that by the time I have finished neither will work!!

Can anyone confirm?
