: A year or so ago, when I was a member of the BMW UUC Digest, I recall someone relating a trick to clean accumulated carbon from the intake tract using Ventil Sauber in a way not quite per the maker's instructions. It involved dumping the stuff down the intake while the engine is running, eventually to the point of engine stall. However, exact details of the procedure have escaped my memory. Might be tough to stall an 8, with the separate intake systems, but should be as equally effective as it is on the 6 cylinder cars. Can anyone help me out?

Yeah that's basically how ya do it. Open up the intake system near the actual intake and pour the ventil sauber into the car. Don't dump it, pour is steadily. This is a common trick for E30 guys like myself. The reaction should be the same in your 8 as it is in my 6 cylinder... it'll cough and wheeze and sound downright SCARY for a while. Then comes the smoke. Black smoke out the exhaust. No, it's worse than you think. This process is not for the faint at heart. It helped me to repeat "Chris said it would be okay" to myself as I watched it happen. Chris was the guy who told me how much of an improvement it would make.
It sounds bad too. The car sounds like a freakin' diesel for a few minutes... it REALLY wants to keep that carbon inside the engine. But, minutes later, after you've pulled out all your hair SURE that you've ruined your finely tuned BMW engine... the car purrs like never before.

After you do it, and let the car sit there and run it through the system for 5-10 minutes (or until it's running basically like normal) you're good to take her back onto the open road and really clean off the carbon. After about 20 minutes... you'll be grinning as the double yellow line approaches. :)
