This board periodically gets inquiries about this, and the consensus is generally the E31 is substantially the same both here and in Europe. If you can only purchase an E31 in Europe, and not here in the States, then be prepared to deal with both the NHTSA and the EPA.

Then, get ready to post a bond with U.S. Customs for the 1.5 times value of the car whilst they impound it with an registered importer. They'll charge you a bundle to bring the car into compliance with the various FMVSS and EPA regulations.

You sure about this? I'll betch it takes at least 5 grand. In the end you'll have an E31 exactly like the one I'm driving that's not worth more than $25K in today's market.
