I live in NY and want to register my car in NC. the car is registered to my dad and the title is in his name. The goal of all this is to excape NY's high insurance premiums.

This is what they call "insurance fraud." If there was ever a claim, the insurer could easily deny coverage on the ground that the insured lied to obtain the coverage. Even if the insurer paid the claim, it would certainly cancel the coverage or non-renew it. Finally, this plan would expose the insured to criminal liability. Almost certainly, the mails or the telephone would be used to transmit information across state lines (NY -> NC). That subjects the insured to FEDERAL criminal prosecution. In my day job, I've had the misfortune to spend some time in the various facilities maintained by the Bureau of Prisons. Trust me on this: You don't wanna live there.

If you can't afford the insurance, you can't afford an E31. Sell the 8-series to somebody who can pay the premiums and buy a Tercel.
