All,

I have just had the pleasure of driving a 740iL for the past few days while my 8 was in the shop (air conditioning expansion valve replacement and new rear view mirror in an attempt to solve intermittent remote problems when operating the alarm from the key). This was my first opportunity to drive a 7-series. I am very impressed with the car. As a matter of fact, I now can't wait for my Q45 to bite the dust so I can replace it with a 7. The 740 did not compare to the 8 in the handling department, but (and more important in my book, since the 7 is not an 8) it did not handle anything like a car of its size. I took it on some very windy back roads by my house that I just rip up in my 8, and it did not feel out of place at all. I refuse to go on those roads w/my Q45 because it feels that the car is attempting to swim instead of drive (at the pace I feel I MUST take those roads J ). Can't say enough good things about the quality and performance of the 740iL (this was a ‘96 w/40K miles).

Sorry for the tangent, but when I messing with the features, I noted the consumption reading for the car on the computer - 15.6MPG. This was averaged over the 300 miles I drove the car over the last two days (I reset the consumption reading when I got the car). My hot-dogging accounted for maybe 25 of those miles. This leads me to believe that my big thirsty 12 cylinder is not as thirsty as I once believed. Way Cool!

Just some food for thought from a casual observation.

-Len
