M Parallel Spoke Wheels (archive)

Does anyone know whether a set of BMW M Parallel Spoke alloy wheels (18 x 8.0 front, 18 x 9.5 rear) would fit a 1991 850i? I was told by a BMW shop that an 850i will only accomodate a 17" wheel and that later CSi models can take 18" wheels. This seems contrary to some of the posts that I have read on this site. Any help would be appreciated.
