I have a '91 850ia, and the shifter works smoothly with no play.

Four years ago, I had a 633csi that a similar problem to the one that you are describing. I disassembled the shifter mechanism, and I discovered that the mini bushings and washers in the system were worn. In the 633, it would cause a sensor to think that it was in D, and it wouldn't start. I wasn't going to keep the 6er, so I just cleaned and snugged, and it worked okay after that.
