1996 850Ci Ashtray problem (archive)

I was wondering if anyone could suggest a solution to an annoying problem with my ashtray. The ashtray will not stay closed, I have takem it to the dealer and they are saying that the whole assembly ($350-$400) needs to be replaced. I was wondering if there was a quick fix or do I need to buy the whole assembly (the interior trim is "bird's eye maple"
