8 Series Satisfaction? (archive)

Dear 8 enthusiasts:

I'm thinking about buying an 8 series. I have a '00 540iA Sport daily driver, and a long history of BMW's and Porsches.

Is the 8 a keeper? To wit, I love 911's, but was disappointed with my 928 after a couple of months.

Which 8 model is preferable? I love doing mechanical refurbishments - is there a good bargain 8 model which just needs a few mods or fixes to make it a keeper?
