: Dear 8 enthusiasts:

: I'm thinking about buying an 8 series. I have a '00 540iA Sport daily driver, and a long history of BMW's and Porsches.

: Is the 8 a keeper? To wit, I love 911's, but was disappointed with my 928 after a couple of months.

: Which 8 model is preferable? I love doing mechanical refurbishments - is there a good bargain 8 model which just needs a few mods or fixes to make it a keeper?

: Thanks,

: John

HEY JOHN, AS A FORMER 928 S4 OWNER I KNOW ABOUT YOUR CONCERNS WITH REPAIRS AND PERFORMANCE ISSUES. I CAN TELL YOU IT'S A DIFFERENT WORLD. I CAN SAY THAT SINCE I BROUGHT MY 850i THERE'S BEEN NO PROBLEMS. I ALSO OWN A 95 325I CONV. WHICH I NEVER HAVE ANY PROBLEMS WITH. BUT I CAN TELL YOU THAT EVERYTHING COSTS FOR THIS TYPE OF BMW. THERE'S PLENTY OF WAYS TO GET "MAD HORSEPOWER" WITH THE V12 ENGINES. I DON'T KNOW MUCH ABOUT THE 840'S BECAUSE I SEE THAT AS A 540i AND I WASN'T THAT INTERESTED IN THAT MODEL. BUT GOOD LUCK. I'M SURE ONCE YOU DRIVE THE 850'S YOU'LL BE CONVINCED THAT IT IS TRUELY "THE ULTIMATE DRIVING MACHINE".
