Had the same problem, only mine was moving randomly around. The dealer said it was an expensive fix... the whole assembly. For the price (hundreds), I figured screw it... its in the instrument cluster.

Odd thing happened... got an Alpina shift knob (yes, for my auto... very nice), and that's when I learned how to remove the knob... just yank it off... while I was down there, I spent about a half hour playing with those little pieces until I finally, pulled on it, moved it up in a circle and it snapped into place. Its hard to describe, but it had come loose and merely needed to be shoved back in. And it works just fine now. Wish I could be of more help, but that's how mine was fixed.

I also rubbed it in my dealer's face...
