It would be highly unusual for the cylinder bores to be bad in a car with this mileage unless it has been abused. What you probably need is a valve job. This involves removing the cylinder heads and resurfacing the valves and seats. Again this is low mileage for this but it does happen sometimes. I'm not familar with the 12's but $5,000 seems excessive for a valve job (it only costs about $6k to replace the engine in the V-8's). Your mechanic should be able to tell you what was leaking - which cylinder and what valve or bore. If its only one valve you could just repair the one side to save money but its best to do a complete valve job if you're doing one.

: You will not have a new engine when complete. If it is a simple valve leak the only things new you will have are new gaskets. I would get a second opinion and try a dealer too. Most of them are good with fair, if expensive prices. I would bet a dealer would not charge $5k for a valve job.
