First, I'm not a transmission guru and I'm sure other can give you a better explanation than I. The shuttering I would assume in clutch plates slipping due to low pressure in the Autobox. Before you get alarmed, this is not a problem. As you have noticed reverse has quite a different gearing than 1st, it's more like 2nd. So when you are sitting on an decline and initiate reverse, the clutches need a lot of pressure to avoid letting the car downhill, and to start moving it backwards takes even more...The 8 is not the lightest of vehicles..:) Standing on a decline doesn't help either, if you have the slightest of low transmission fluid, air bubbles with cause even more shuttering.
To test if you have a transmission problem, which you probably don't, engage reverse keep you foot on the brake and press the accelerator. The Rpm shouldn't go above 2k and no shuttering should occur.
The bottom line, you shouldn't worry about the occasional decline shuttering part.
