Exterior differences between 840Ci and 850Ci (archive)

I know this question must have been asked a billion times, but I missed the answer so here goes:

Although the exterior differences between the 850CSI and 850CI are pretty noticeable, what are the styling cues that differentiate the 850Ci and 840Ci? Were there any styling changes from year to year?

Something about the 850 makes it look different from my 840, but I can't put my finger on it...

What do you think?
