Fan Clutch (archive)

The new fan clutch in my 1991 850 (manual trans) doesn't disengage until approximately 2,500-3,000 rpm, resulting in a lot of fan noise and noticeable drag on the engine when accelerating from low rpm. I've never noticed this in my other BMWs. Has anyone else experienced this? Can anything be done?--I'm tired of sounding like a city bus.
