8 Series badging (archive)

I'm not sure I understand the 8 series badging. I was always under the impression that the first digit and a BMW model number was the series and the last two are the engine displacement. (The 330i is a 3 series with the 3.0 liter engine). The 8 series seems not to have abiding by traditional BMW badging.

850Ci = 5.4 Liter Engine
850CSi = 5.6 Liter Engine

Anyone know why this is? Or am i totally wrong about BMW badging?
