Derek,

I had a similar problem twice with my 91 850i.

The first solution was to replace the sending unit. The original was defective on the new car directly from the factory.

Second time, I was able to play with the variable resistor and clean it and it has worked every since. BTW it's fun to get the sending unit out because it is attached as an integral unit to the dual fuel pumps which are submerged in the gas tank. Have to remove the right rear window trim, remove the seat and there is a special tool to remove the seal. Two crossed screwdrivers will also work.

Incidently, I picked my car up in Portland and was driving it down to SF. I pulled into Medford to the Bmw/Toyota/suburu/etc/etc/etc. stealer. WhenI drove the car in just about every mechanic came over to look at it and the head mechanic made two uterances which influenced my to drive away.

What kind of car is that...????
When I told him...... a BMW 850i
Never seen one of those before....????

I didn't even ask if they had a sending unit.
