Isn't it possible to reprogram the transmission chip (or swap it) for something better ?
If it is in auto-mode and does use first gear, it should be up to its task when in manual-mode, too.

I remember reading somewhere that the 4-speed auto doesn't switch to first when in Economy-mode (what a laugh), but does so in Sports-mode.

I don't know for sure if the 4-speed auto is adaptive but it seems so. When in city traffic only, I have to drive slowly...but after taking it for a spin it tends te react better...but this is hardly scientific evidence.

I just read a report about a five-series in which they where also complaining about the shifting pattern (different hardware; same software?)
