I had a similar problem with my 91 850i 6spd last month here in Colorado. We had 26 days above 90 degrees (F)....and the 850i was running very hot towards overheating. Also the air conditioning quit working. Turns out the Thermostat went bad (as has been suggested already) and that the air conditioning freon had run out (prior owners, I find out, did not service the air conditioning due to low use). Since late July, the 850i is running very well.....and I've been freeway and city driving in nearly 100 degree heat with full air on with no problems.
Also, these 12 cylinders really put out the heat! My garage stays toasty after parking it hours later. When something goes awry in the cooling arena, it shows up quick....
