I only have a problem if I have a number of shutdowns and startups in a short period of time. I live in Atlanta, and if the car is started from cool, I can sit in 95F heat with the air conditioner running full blast, and the needle will sit about one needle-width to the left of vertical, which seems to be about normal for mine. High speed only cools it. I only have a problem if I sit in traffic for 15 minutes; go to the video store; get back in; go to the grocery store; get back in; pick up my dry cleaning; and get back in. After three successive hot-soaks in less than an hour, it runs with the needle at the first mark to the right of vertical. If I turn off the air conditioner, it drops back down to normal. This doesn't happen in the winter. I have a new radiator, hoses, water pump, thermostat, and BMW brand coolant. I did find that it is controllable by not running Amoco Super but by running the Silver which is a lower octane. Higher octane makes a hotter blast.
