If it is a manual they let the engine reach 4000 rpm or so (depends on the car of course) and than drop the clutch.
In a manual they put it in drive (from neutral) at 4000 rpm or use the brakes to 'preload' the engine.
Also when using a manual in everyday life you could be just as slow or fast as someone with an automatic transmission. If you do the (up)shifts yourself it is much more likely that the shifts are not spot-on (wrong RPM or too slow on the clutch). Seconds are easily lost.
I dragraced (yeah I know...they are not ment for it) a Subaru Impreza turbo (4WD; manual transmission; 218 bhp; 0-60 in 5 to 6 seconds; much lighter car) and my 850iA kept up with it very well (no more than half a car apart during the run to 60 mph). Unfortunately there wasn't enough road to reach higher speeds at which the Subaru would have reached its limit well before the BMW would have.
