"Nitrogen Ball"... (archive)

... Bavarian Motorsport of Kennett Square is presently replacing (under warranty) the "nitrogen ball" in my Euro 850i. Evidently, this part is an integral component to maintaining brake system booster pressure.

Could someone explain to me what this part actually is? I have never heard of a "nitrogen ball" before and am very curious as to it's function.
