I put a 3.15 from a 1988 750 in my 6spd and had the limited slip unit upgraded to 50% lock by Blanton. You have to keep your rear cover and input shaft, but otherwise everything bolts together and you can't tell it from the stock 850 unit. Major difference in acceleration.BMW and its parts system (ETK) refuse to recognize the compatibility. Dinan and other tuners also will not confirm the compatibility and actually talked a friend out of it. If you make the change replace the output shaft seals--its cheap insurance against slow seepage which is common after 50k miles.
