Well my US '91's came with the two button remote. and has IR remote, and the receiver is in the rear-view mirror. If your remote is dead, you get them from BMW. I just DID it is a newer style I have this system working on my 91 the cabel for IR unit is on (passenger) right side kick panel around behind the panels. If you have this option installed on the car. If not the cable's two are tied up behind the carpet right side (passenger) on 91 this was option on the 850i
also I have the drawing for this I can scan and email If you want.

Sorry Stan for butting in....

Kurt,
I'm fairly sure that the US '91's came with the single button remote. The older 850's in Europe had an IR remote, and the receiver is in the rear-view mirror. Apparently, due to some teutonic wisdom, they did not equip US cars with the IR, and instead put in the simple radio frequency remote. Your keychain remote should have one button, and a little square LED indicator. If the indicator isn't lighting, check the batteries. If it's just the battery, that's the good news. If your remote is dead, that's the bad news. From my archives, it appears that you can't get them from BMW anymore. Perhaps Mark Fling can interject here... I know he got his system working on his '92 after a bit of digging around behind the panels. Check the archives here as well, as this problem has been kicked around before. If you want a copy of the same discussion from PMB's list, let me know and I'll e-mail it to you.

Stan
