Lez,
During my racing career we tried a lot of different pad materials. We ran best on Repco MetalMasters (carbon-metallic) for a few years until the advent of carbon-kevlar pads. The switch to carbon-kevlar was very noticable (I can't remember what brand we used) and I found them to be excellent street/autocross pads. However, I'm relating my experiences with an extremely light weight car, so they may not be good for our heavy beasts on the street. If interested, Porterfield makes carbon-kevlar street/light competition pads for the E-31, but they ain't cheap ($169 fronts, $119 rears) - http://www.porterfield-brakes.com. One issue that always was discussed with carbon-metallic is rotor wear, and this will depend on the metal quality of the rotors.

I also found an interesting (but somewhat dated) discussion page from a VW forum (link below) which talks about some differences between aftermarket pads. Apparently Mintex, Repco/Axxis and PBR are all the same corporation. One poster on this discussion indicated that the Mintex had better heat rating and cold performance than MetalMasters. It also appears that the Mintex Red Box are the street versions.
