They pay more for it in Aspen because the local economy will allow it and support it. In Denver, there is likely more competition and they cannot get away with it. I see $2.19 at the Texaco and Mobil station down the street from me. If I want to fill up, I plan on doing so when I get closer to the central area San Diego, or at least less affluent areas and I pay about 10-15 cents less. Go figure that one out, other than the local station owners know that people in the more affluent areas are either too lazy or too snooty to drive into town and pay less.
In Denver, the cheapest place in the state for gas, it's $1.79 for premium 91 octane (remember, we're a mile high above sea-level). In the rest of the state, especially the mountains, it's as high as $2.99 for premium (Aspen).
